4 Characteristics of Positive Leadership

Every organization needs strong leaders to guide them and set them in the right direction. Being a good leader, however, isn’t just about having authority and making sure that things get done right – it’s also about having positive leadership skills and helping your team be successful while they do the same.

Positive leadership doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but you can learn the characteristics that define it by looking at examples of leaders who have mastered this style and others who may still be struggling with it. Positive leadership is a form of management that helps people feel empowered and motivated. Leaders with this style encourage and support their followers, which in turn helps them feel valued. It may seem like an oxymoron, but the best leaders have to be nice to succeed in a team environment. Here are four characteristics that help show what it means to be a positive leader:

  • Positive leadership focuses on what’s right. They don’t focus on what’s wrong or what could go wrong. Instead, they focus on how they can contribute positively to the team.
  • They care about their followers as if they were family members. They want the very best for each person and want them to excel at their job.

2) Stay positive

It may not always be easy, but it makes the world a better place.

Recognize and celebrate accomplishments – When I do something well, it’s important for me to acknowledge that and feel proud about it. I like to tell myself a good job or make a fist with my thumb up when I’ve done something well. Those little things can really make a big difference! Plus, when you appreciate what you have and are grateful for your successes, it will motivate you to keep going.

3) Set an example

It’s not always easy to be a leader and I’ve had my share of mistakes. The following are 4 characteristics that make a positive leader:

  • A positive leader can be relied on for clarity and direction. This person will set specific goals, give clear feedback, and articulate what needs to happen in order to achieve success.
  • A positive leader creates an environment where people feel valued and appreciated. They do this by giving compliments, sharing achievements, recognizing good work, and being honest with feedback.
  • A positive leader leads by example. When they say something needs to change, they change it themselves first before expecting others to do the same thing.

4) Keep it real (be honest, authentic, transparent)

No one wants to work with a boss who is never satisfied. It’s not just frustrating, it can be downright disheartening. This is what I think a positive leader looks like:

  • They have an open mind and are willing to listen to the opinions of their team. A good leader will consider all angles before making decisions and will take feedback from others into account.
  • They are clear in their communication with you. You should never feel confused about what your next steps are or where you stand as a result of something that was said or not said by your manager.
  • They see the potential in every member of their team, and they encourage them to achieve more than they thought possible for themselves.
