1. Visit the Doctor With Her
As loving parents, you and your wife are a team. So if she’s got doctor appointments, do your absolute best to ensure that you can come along with her. Not only will this give you a chance to understand what’s happening with your wife’s and baby’s health, but it will also give her much-needed support.
This way, you’ll be able to understand firsthand how the health of your wife and baby needs to be addressed. It will also give her confidence that you’ve got her back throughout this entire process, which is both emotionally and physically taxing on her.
You can even show that you’re attentive and excited for your baby’s introduction to the world through early baby gifts! Though this might be more viable closer to term, a few outfits from Hanna Andersson can unite you and your wife closer together during this entire process.
2. Help During Morning Sickness
Not only is morning sickness uncomfortable for your wife, but it can also deplete her of her energy before the day even begins. While you can’t do much to prevent morning sickness from happening, you can let her know that you’re with her during every step of this difficult journey.
So even if you’re bleary-eyed and fatigued, get up when she does if it’s to address morning sickness. Hold her hair up, kneel by her side, put a towel under her knees to prevent the floor’s hard impact.
Afterward, make sure she can recovery as comfortably as possible. Make sure she doesn’t brush her teeth. Instead, help her up as she swishes water and/or a mouthwash around her mouth. Help her clean up and get her to bed to rest some more.
During the few hours after that, make sure she eats easy-to-digest foods that don’t upset her stomach. She should intake plenty of fluids and avoid foods or smells that trigger nausea. Help her with each of these tasks for the sake of her comfort and health.
3. Prohibit Alcohol and Caffeine
Many mothers already understand the mission of avoiding alcohol and caffeine for the sake of their future babies. But whether out of ignorance or temptation, you can help your pregnant wife regulate their consumption even further.
Sometimes, there may be alcohol or caffeine in the foods in your home without you knowing it! Though they might have had minimal impact on your wife’s health before the pregnancy, a pregnancy changes that level of impact.
This is truer for caffeine content. So scour through your household food supplies and make sure that you understand which foods have caffeine or alcohol. From there, you may want to label them or even get rid of them altogether.
4. Remove Stress Triggers
As a loving husband, it’s not fun witnessing your pregnant wife experience emotional hardships. From restrictions to hormones to worrying about her baby’s health, your wife has a lot weighing on her body and mind.
So you’ll want to help her relieve and prevent stress from settling in. Not only will this make the pregnancy journey easier on your wife, but it will also prevent high blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to premature birth, which can threaten the health of your baby.
There are plenty of ways to relieve your wife of stress. Talking to them and being sensitive to their desires and needs is a surefire way of doing that. You can also give them a nightly massage, meditate with them, and even engage in some aromatherapy!
5. Exercise with Them
Speaking of relieving stress, exercise is a great way of doing just that. Regardless of your wife’s pre-pregnancy workout routine, or lack thereof, it’s a good idea to encourage your wife to exercise and accompany them while she does so.
Exercise is great during pregnancy for several reasons. There is, of course, the benefit of relieving stress. But it can also help your wife improve her posture, which could relieve her of discomforts such as backaches and fatigue.
It can also help her build more stamina, which is crucial during labor and delivery. Either way, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends 30 minutes of exercise a day for several days a week. Even better if they can exercise every day!
Of course, jump-squats and sprints are most likely out of the question. But exercise doesn’t have to be so high-impact to be effective. In fact, lower-impact exercises are encouraged for pregnant women to not harm themselves or their babies.
But walking, Pilates squats, and weight training are all great exercise options for your pregnant wife! As long as they enjoy themselves and can stick to the routine regularly.
However, it’s important to understand your wife’s limits too. This is especially true for those with diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. Pregnancy-related medical conditions such as a weak cervix, low placenta, and more can make excessive exercise do more harm than good.
