Global Interplay of Nations Competing On a World Stage

The world is becoming a global village at a rather fast pace. As the populations on earth continue to grow, so do the energy requirements. There is a need for energy to facilitate industrial and economic development. The earth, however, gas had challenges meeting the increasing energy needs. For that reason, countries have been forced to turn to more sustainable energy.

Renewable energy is the best hope for the world at this point. It has not been an easy journey as countries are facing challenges with market failures, access to raw materials for renewable energy, information, and carbon footprint. Most nations have however made strides in their efforts to utilize renewable energy. There are several technologies that countries in the world have been using in light of renewable energy. They can be classified as the first generation, second generation, and third-generation technologies.

1. First-generation

Nations that have plentiful resources mostly use first-generation renewable energy technologies. The technologies include biomass and hydroelectricity. Biomass is a technology that takes advantage of industrial organic and agricultural waste.

Hydroelectricity, as the name suggests, relies on the gravitational force caused by flowing water for the generation of energy. Hydropower is currently being produced in over 150 countries.

2. Second generation

Second-generation renewable energy technologies are more common in the big economies. Financial institutions and large industrial companies are also embracing technologies. They include photovoltaics, wind power, and solar heating. Photovoltaic cells convert light into electricity. Wind power uses the flow of air to turn turbines to produce mechanical power needed to turn electric generators.

3. Third generation

These are mostly still under development, and they include sophisticated bioenergy technologies, solar concepts, and geothermal systems.

How Different Nations Plan To Commercialize Renewable Energy Technologies

As the demand for sustainable energy increases, most nations are making efforts that contribute to the promotion of renewable energy technologies. Here is how different nations are contributing to the commercialization of renewable energy technologies to benefit other countries in the globe.

Table of Contents

1. China

  • The Chinese government has set aside an urgent incentive to invest in sustainable energy

China has been faced with challenges in mitigating air and water pollution and economic stability. In a bid to combat air pollution, the government has directed resources to the development of renewable energy technology. Note that the consumption of fossil fuel accounts for 90% of sulfur dioxide emissions in the country. The need for the government to control pollution has seen it willing to invest in renewable energy.

  • China is encouraging foreign direct investment in the renewable energy sector

China is open to multinationals concerned with the development of renewable energy technologies. As such, companies are able to take advantage of the skills and knowledge that the country possesses in the development of sustainable energy products. To ensure that all countries are able to benefit from this, China is also encouraging partnerships. The government is also financing multinational enterprises in the sector.

  • China is sharing experience in renewable energy technologies with other nations

Being a global leader in renewable energy, China is sharing its knowledge and skills in renewable energy through partnerships with agencies such as the UN. This has been through funding and participating in renewable energy projects, workshops, and the establishment of testing centers for renewable energy technologies.

2. Finland

Finland is not well endowed with hydrocarbons. This has been a motivating factor to the development and use of renewable energy in the country. Finland is among the countries that are commercializing renewable energy. The Nordic conditions have made it possible to tap wind power, biomass, black liquor, and hydroelectric power.

Here is how Finland is commercializing renewable energy.

  • Research and development in renewable energy

The Finnish government is supporting research and development in clean technologies. The government has sent up research institutes in the country and has supplied the resources needed to realize the sustainable energy dream. More so, relevant ministries in the country are supporting are committed to this project.

The state is also aiding the private sector concerned with the development and deployment of renewable energy technologies.

  • Innovation when it comes to renewable energy

The country is aware that for it to make renewable energy possible, innovation must come to play. The state’s support for innovation in different areas of renewable energy has made the commercialization of sustainable energy technologies. Players in the renewable energy sector are finding new ways of utilizing biomass for energy and the transfer of renewable energy. At the same time, they are making it affordable for other nations to benefit.

3. Germany

Germany is one of the key players in renewable energy. The country relies mostly on biomass, solar, and wind. Here is how the country is going about the commercialization of renewable energy.

  • Deployment of wind turbines

The federal government has seen to it that wind turbines are widely distributed across the country. The government is looking to increase the distribution of the technologies, with the focus mainly directed at constructing wind farms on water. Why is this so? The players in the renewable energy sector have realized that winds are stronger offshore as opposed to land.

  • Research and development

Research and development have played a crucial role in Germany’s efforts to commercialize renewable energy. The most significant source of biomass in Germany is agriculture. However, through research, it has been discovered that wood production can contribute immensely to the generation of biomass. The country is committed to research to take the use of renewable energy a notch higher. That is, combining biofuels and petroleum.

  • Supply of photovoltaic cell systems

As earlier mentioned, photovoltaic cells work by converting light into electricity. Germany is among the world’s largest consumers of photovoltaic energy. The fantastic part is that renewable energy sources can be applied on the grid or off-grid. The government has backed the installation of photovoltaic solar panels since the first time they were mass-produced. The country’s electricity demand is mostly being met by solar power.

Germany has, for a long time, using solar panels, through research and development, the nation has discovered ways the panels can operate more optimally. This has seen Germany stay up in the ranks of the world’s biggest manufacturers of photovoltaic cell components.

  • ·       Innovation

Germany’s renewable energy industry is one of the world’s most innovative and successful. The country hosts the most renowned wind power companies in the world. The companies have played a significant role in the transition to renewable energy systems. The government has also been supportive of the different agencies endorsing renewable energy.

Renewable energy is playing a critical role in combating climate change. The burning of fossil fuels to get energy has impacted the environment negatively. It has increased the emission of greenhouse gases, leading to global warming. Fortunately, most nations in the world are looking to incorporate renewable energy technologies to generate sustainable energy. Some countries are steps ahead, but they are doing all they can to ensure that the entire globe benefits from sustainable energy. China, Finland, and Germany are only a few of the countries that have made remarkable progress in the renewable energy sector.
